Ewgenija Schall in dialog

Ewgenija Schall takes us into the enticing world of culinary photography with her colorful but natural images. We asked the food photographer what inspires her and how she got into food photography. Read more about the multifaceted personality of this cheerful artist.

Ewgenija, how did you become a photographer?

My passion for photography started very early. As a young mother, I found a source of inspiration in the kitchen and began to record my culinary creations. What started as a hobby developed into my professional passion through constant experimentation and self-study.

What fascinates you about food photography?

Like many food photographers, I am a passionate foodie. However, I don’t just appreciate the taste, but also the visual aesthetics. I’m fascinated by the combination of colors, textures and shapes and how to best capture them to tell a story. I love the artistic freedom that sets no limits to my culinary creativity.

How would you describe your style of photography?

My style of photography is natural and authentic. I focus on the authenticity of the food, natural lighting and unobtrusive post-processing to present the food as it is. I value authenticity.

Do you have a favorite piece of equipment?

Yes, a green tray that was made from an Indian door and came to Germany from there. The tray has a beautiful color and is suitable for different scenarios. And it’s popular – even a client from Switzerland wanted me to use it as a background for her project.

Can you tell us something about yourself?

Born in North Kazakhstan and now living in Germany, I am happily married and a proud mother of my 18 year old son. But our life would not be complete without our two pet cats. They are not just pets, but an integral part of our family. Their love enriches our home and makes us smile every day.

What is important to you in life?

My motto in life is to cherish every moment and make the most of every day. It is important for me to live consciously and fully, to enjoy the small pleasures of everyday life and to notice the beauty in our surroundings. I appreciate what I have and I am ready to courageously explore new paths.

Ewgenija, before food photography you had another profession, how did the change come about?

My career went from accountant to office administrator, from bank to private practice. But in the end, I didn’t just quit my previous job to turn my hobby, food photography, into a career. I also wanted more freedom and flexibility in my work life. Being able to work on my own schedule and express myself creatively is important to me. For me, working independently also means taking responsibility for my own success, and I really value that.
