An edible wild herb is known as white goosefoot also known as melde

Weißer Gänsefuß ist bei uns nur als Unkraut bekannt, das liebend gern im Gemüsebeet und Getreidefeldern wächst. In anderen Regionen jedoch, besonders in Indien, im Himalaya und in China, wird er als wertvolle Futterpflanze, Pseudogetreide oder Gemüse kultiviert und angebaut. Dort, wo er wachsen darf, dient er auch bei uns als wichtige Nahrungsquelle für viele Schmetterlingsraupen sowie andere Insekten, Vögel, Weidetiere und Rehwild.
