00342562 - A telescope at a window
13898911 - Scorpius rising over a telescope and observers at the annual OzSky Star Party in Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia on April 5, 2016. Mars is the bright reddish object outshining Antares and to the left of Antares. Saturn is below Mars above the trees.
13898393 - The 2-day-old crescent Moon with Earthshine, set in the stars and deep blue of twilight, on November 24, 2014. Taken from near Silver City, New Mexico with the TMB 92mm refractor at f/5.5 and Canon 6D at ISO 100. The stars are trailed slightly because the telescope was following the Moon at the lunar tracking rate.
13900504 - The dark nebula on the Cygnus-Cepheus border nicknamed the Funnel Cloud Nebula (a name provided by Alan Whitman in a 2006 Sky and Telescope article) but that is a very prominent naked eye feature to the northern Milky Way, more obvious as a dark area than the Northern Coal Sack to the south. This is a fine object for binoculars and the telephoto lens shot here provides the field of most binoculars.
13899320 - This is the occultation of Mars by the Full Moon on December 7, 2022, in a composite showing the motion of Mars relative to the Moon. The motion here is from left to right. However, while this composite makes it look like Mars was doing the moving, it was really the Moon that was passing in front of Mars. But for this sequence I set the telescope mount to track the Moon at its rate of motion against the background stars and Mars, to keep the Moon more or less stationary on the frame while Mars and the background sky passed behind it.
13998912 - Messier 27,the Dumbbell Nebula in Vulpecula the Fox,one of the brightest planetary nebulas in the sky. I've shot this many times; this is with the Askar APO120 refractor as part of testing the telescope in October 2023.
13899769 - VLA radio telescope array, near Socorro, New Mexico.
13899753 - One of the 27 antennas of the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope complex in New Mexico (with others in the distance at lower right) illuminated by moonlight, on December 13, 2013, peak night for the Geminid meteor shower. A single exposure of 30 seconds with the Rokinon 14mm lens at f/2.8 and Canon 5D MkII at ISO 800. Orion is rising a lower centre. The Moon is the bright object at upper right. The Pleiades and Hyades are above centre.
13899984 - The Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico, at sunset, March 17, 2013, with the Earth shadow rising at right and the pink Belt of Venus along the eastern horizon. This is a 2-section panorama, hand-held, with the 14mm lens and Canon 60Da camera.
13899519 - This is a stack of images demonstrating the number of satellites passing through the field of a wide-field telescope over a little more an hour. The field frames the Coma Berenices star cluster. This is from my home at 51° North, a latitude more prone to seeing satellites lit by the Sun well into the evening, if not all night closer to summer solstice. Most trails are north-south so they are likely NOT Starlink satellites but polar orbiting satellites. Interesting that the trails have different colours, likely from their solar panels or other structures reflecting blue and gold tints.
13999047 - Comet 2022 E3 (ZTF) at top,as the green fuzzy star above the semi-circle of stars marking the constellation of Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown. The comet was approaching the Sun and Earth at this time (January 3,2023) and was brightening, but even here was visible in binoculars and sporting a short dust tail and cyan-colored coma. ZTF = Zwicky Transient Facility, the telescope used to discover the comet in early 2022.
13900177 - An observer with a Dobsonian telescope on the main field at the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party in the dark sky preserve of Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park in late August 2019.
13899463 - Astronomer Vance Petriew at the eyepiece of his 20-inch Dobsonian reflector telescope, at the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Star Party in Cypress Hills, SK. This is a single 20 second exposure with the Canon 5DMkII at ISO 4000, and 24mm Canon L-series lens at f/2. A faint aurora adds the horizon colours. The photo was taken on the occasion of the second return of Comet Petriew 185/P since its discovery 11 years earlier in 2001 at this very same location.
